Guthrie and PDT to Explore Strategic Development in Johor

EBP8

Petaling Jaya, 22 December 2025 – SD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie) and Permodalan Darul Ta’zim Sdn Bhd (PDT) today signed a Memorandum of Business Exploration (MoBE) to jointly explore the development of up to 5,000 acres of Guthrie’s Kulai Estate, located within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

The proposed collaboration aims to leverage Guthrie’s extensive land resources and PDT’s proven expertise in strategic investments. It also envisions the creation of a world-class industrial ecosystem that will be aligned with the aspiration of the State to advance future development in strategic and high impact sectors.

The JS-SEZ, a landmark Malaysia–Singapore initiative, is a major catalyst for Johor—one of Malaysia’s fastest-growing states, with 6.4% GDP growth in 2024, the highest nationally. Designed to attract high-value industries and strengthen cross-border economic integration, the economic corridor spans over 3,500 km², covering strategic areas including Iskandar Puteri, Pasir Gudang, Pontian, Kulai, and Pengerang. It leverages Johor’s land availability, connectivity, as well as world-class infrastructure that includes major ports—Johor Port, Port of Tanjung Pelepas, and Tanjung Langsat—Senai International Airport, and proximity to Singapore’s Changi Airport. This positions Johor as a strategic gateway for companies targeting ASEAN and global markets.

“Guthrie has had a long-standing presence in Johor, operating oil palm estates, mills, and a refinery in the State for decades, driving sustainable development that delivers tangible benefits to local communities," said Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, Gutrhie's Group Managing Director. "We are excited to continue playing a role in Johor’s transformative growth through the strategic development of our landbank within the JS-SEZ."

Guthrie's continued partnership with PDT reinforces a shared vision for regional development and the company's own strategy of collaborating with established and reputable industry leaders as well as relevant State agencies, as it expands its new industrial development vertical.

"Through this collaboration, we aim to create long-term value for our stakeholders while contributing meaningfully to the development agenda of both the Johor state and the nation as a whole," Mohamad Helmy said.

Dato’ Ramlee Bin A Rahman, President & Group Chief Executive of Permodalan Darul Ta’zim, added, “Our collaboration with Guthrie underscores PDT’s dedication to fostering strategic partnerships that accelerate Johor’s economic progress. The development of Parcel F within JS-SEZ will not only enhance industrial capacity but also attract global investors, creating opportunities for sustainable growth and innovation.”

Parcel F – situated in the Kulai and Sedenak region of Johor — is one of the strategic development zones within JS-SEZ. It focuses on diverse economic activities that leverage manufacturing excellence, advanced services, and emerging sectors, such as digital economy, business services, education, energy, food security, healthcare, logistics and tourism that can attract high-value industries and strategic investments.

The MoBE provides a framework for further negotiations towards a definitive agreement, and will focus on key areas including land development, infrastructure planning, regulatory compliance, financial structuring, and the integration of sustainable and smart technologies.  It marks the second collaboration between Guthrie and PDT, following the recent announcement of a strategic partnership to develop a new 935.24-acre integrated industrial park in Mukim Kulai, Johor.

Petaling Jaya, 7 December 2025 – SD Guthrie Berhad and Kulim Technology Park Corporation Sdn Bhd (KTPC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today to explore a strategic collaboration for the development of an industrial park in Kulim, Kedah.

Under the MOU, both parties will jointly assess the potential development of up to 1,000 acres within Guthrie’s Bukit Selarong Estate, which spans approximately 6,357 acres and is located in the Kulim Industrial Corridor (KIC). The proposed collaboration aims to leverage Guthrie’s land resources and KTPC’s expertise in industrial park management, to support Kedah’s economic growth and Malaysia’s industrial ambitions.

A clear impetus for this collaboration is the area’s proximity to Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP) that was developed by KTPC, which is wholly owned by Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Kedah. The existing infrastructure supporting KHTP offers leverage for future development and expansion. KHTP is a leading technology and industrial hub in northern Peninsular Malaysia, attracting global players in semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, as well as renewable energy, and forms part of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).

Tan Sri Dr Nik Norzrul Thani Nik Hassan Thani, Chairman of Guthrie said that this MOU represents a significant step toward the establishment of a strategic relationship between Guthrie and the state. By leveraging our land resources and KTPC’s proven expertise, we hope to drive transformation and growth in Kedah, while strengthening Malaysia’s position as a world-class economic and technology hub.

“After our joint ventures in Negeri Sembilan, where NS Corporation is one of the partners, and in Johor where Permodalan Darul Ta’zim Sdn Bhd is a partner from the state, we are happy to sign this MOU where KTPC, together with Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) play an integral role in Kedah’s industrial development. Through this initiative, we hope to gain invaluable experience in large-scale industrial development while advancing our commitment to sustainability and innovation,” he added.

The partnership will focus on key areas including land acquisition and development, infrastructure planning, regulatory compliance, financial structuring, and the integration of sustainable and smart technologies. This initiative reflects Guthrie’s commitment to creating long-term value for stakeholders.

The MOU is effective for six months and provides a framework for further negotiations towards a definitive agreement. The event which was held at Wisma Darul Aman, Alor Setar, Kedah was attended by the Kedah Menteri Besar, YAB Dato’ Seri Haji Muhammad Sanusi bin Md Nor.

Tuesday, 2 December 2025 - SD Guthrie Berhad and its partners, Eco World Development Group Berhad and Permodalan Darul Ta’zim Sdn Bhd (PDT), have agreed to amend the shareholding proportions in Eco Business Park 8 (EBP8), based in Mukim Kulai, Johor. Under the updated agreement, the partners agreed that PDT shall retain a 10% stake in Eco Business Park 8 Sdn Bhd (EBP8SB), while both Guthrie, through its 100% subsidiary SD Guthrie Land Ventures (SDGLV), and EcoWorld shall hold 45% each.

EBP8 is a planned integrated industrial park that will be well-positioned to capitalise on the longer-term growth potential of Iskandar Malaysia, which is within the vibrant and promising Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

Guthrie’s Group Managing Director, Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, said that the company had ventured cautiously into the new business vertical of industrial development in 2024, but is now ready to take a larger stake in the new project.

He said, “With the increase in stake to 45%, Guthrie will play a more strategic role in the joint venture. We are pleased to work closely with PDT and EcoWorld. This is a strategic move that will enable us to deliver sustainable returns to our shareholders.”

Mohamad Helmy noted that industrial development will be an important pillar for the Group's future growth. With this renewed strategy to hold larger stakes in development companies, Guthrie will be developing new capacity and expertise that will bode well for its shareholders.  "Considering the scale of our strategic landbank, it makes perfect sense for us to create more value where possible,” he added.

The proposed development in Mukim Kulai for the integrated industrial development, will feature industrial lots, ready-built facilities, and supporting commercial components with an estimated gross development value of RM3.75 billion. PDT is the investment arm of the Johor State Government that plays a pivotal role in fostering strategic collaborations to advance Johor’s long-term economic agenda and attract high-value investments. Guthrie, one of Malaysia’s largest landowners, has in recent years begun unlocking the value of its extensive landbank through new business verticals including industrial parks and renewable energy. EcoWorld contributes its technical expertise and proven capabilities in delivering green, digital-ready industrial estates as Development Manager through its wholly-owned subsidiary Eco World Project Management Sdn Bhd.

The proposed 8- to 10-year development in Mukim Kulai is for an integrated industrial development featuring industrial lots, ready-built facilities and supporting commercial components. To be branded Eco Business Park 8, with an estimated gross development value of RM3.75 billion, the project is designed to serve high-value and innovation-led sectors including high-tech and artificial intelligence supply chains, advanced electrical and electronics, biotechnology and medical technologies, food technologies and logistics.

The site is strategically located within the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), with close proximity to Senai International Airport and excellent connectivity via the North–South Expressway. These advantages enhance its appeal to domestic and international industrialists seeking efficient access, strong logistical networks and a well-supported operating environment.

Today’s signing marks EcoWorld’s second joint venture with Guthrie, following the April 2025 agreements entered into with Guthrie and NS Corporation to develop Eco Business Park 7 in Malaysia Vision Valley 2.0, Negeri Sembilan. The combined strengths of both parties along with PDT will release substantial synergistic benefits to help accelerate and further advance the development of Iskandar Malaysia’s dynamic industrial ecosystem.

The joint venture comes at an opportune time, allowing the partners to pool their extensive knowledge, expertise and resources to deliver a future-focused industrial park that will attract quality investors, support local industrialists and drive high-growth value creation. This partnership supports Johor’s ambition to advance sustainable, long-term economic development while positioning the State for the next phase of industrial transformation.

Quote from YB Dato’ Ramlee A Rahman, President & Group Chief Executive,
Permodalan Darul Ta’zim, (PDT):
“The development of Eco Business Park 8 is one of many opportunities visioned under the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). By positioning this development within the JS-SEZ corridor in Kulai, we are not just offering industrial land; we are creating a hightech ecosystem capable of leveraging JS-SEZ incentives to attract top-tier multinational corporations. This project perfectly aligns with PDT’s mandate as the State’s delivery anchor partner, ensuring that the influx of high-value investments translates into sustainable economic complexity and quality jobs for Bangsa Johor.” said YB Dato’ Ramlee.

Quote from Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, Guthrie’s Group Managing Director:
“With our strategic landbank spread across Malaysia, Guthrie is in a strong position to grow our industrial development portfolio. This new business vertical is in its early days but shows every promise of becoming an important contributor to our bottomline. “The partnerships we have forged with well-known industry leaders such as EcoWorld, enable us to accelerate progress and to establish Guthrie in this new sector. Together, we will continue advancing development agendas that generate meaningful benefits for Johor and for Malaysia
as a whole,” said Datuk Mohamad Helmy.

Quote from Dato’ Chang Khim Wah, President & CEO of EcoWorld:
“This partnership brings together a shared vision for sustainable, future-ready development and combines our complementary strengths to meet rising demand, especially from technology-driven and advanced manufacturing sectors. With its strategic location and excellent connectivity, we are confident that Eco Business Park 8 will attract quality investors and contribute meaningfully to Johor’s continued rise as a leading regional powerhouse for industry and innovation,” said Dato’ Chang.

Land Use That Feeds the World: A Case for Sustainable Palm Oil

Speech by Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, Group Managing Director of SD Guthrie and Chairman of Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) at World Climate Summit 2025 (COP30 - Belém, Brazil, 14 November 2025)

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,

I am delighted to be here in Brazil, a new producer of one of the most important edible oils in the world – palm oil.

As an industry veteran myself, I can tell you that palm oil done right is a remarkable thing. If we want to use as little land as possible to get the maximum results, in the context of edible oils, the best solution is palm oil. You could say that I am a paid for spokesperson for the industry … and you’d be right. For that reason, I will let the facts speak for themselves. You can Google; you can ChatGPT; you can check everything I am going to tell you about Land Use to Feed the World.

I realise that some of you may not have heard of palm oil before today, or if you had, you heard the propaganda that goes with it. I use the word “propaganda”, intentionally, because we have been told – for decades – that palm oil is a primary cause of deforestation and species extinction. This is propaganda because the facts clearly show that most human activity negatively impacts the planet ... but contrary to popular belief, palm oil is not one of the major culprits. It is a fact that the palm tree requires less land and less inputs to produce more oil, than all its competitors.

I work for a company called SD Guthrie, one of the world’s largest producers of certified sustainable palm oil, or CSPO. We produce more than 2 million metric tonnes of CSPO every year and we have done so for more than a decade. That’s about 12% of global CSPO supply.

Guthrie has a planted hectarage of just over 560,000 ha, which is about two and a half times Brazil’s total oil palm hectarage. So, Brazil … when we talk about using land responsibly to feed the world, the oil palm tree may well be a real solution for you.

Yield comparison of the world’s oil crops

Let me explain why. This is from Our World in Data. The oil palm is between 4 and 10 times more productive per hectare than any other edible oil available in the world. Let’s translate that into digestible numbers.

Global land use for oil crops

This is the total hectarage planted with oil palm in the world.

This is the total hectarage under soya cultivation. This is sunflower. And rapeseed….

 World’s vegetable oil production

And this is how much palm oil is produced on this land.

And this is how much soya oil is produced. And corn. And sunflower. And rapeseed….

About 336 million hectares of land is planted with crops that produce edible oil. Of this, less than 10% or over 28 million hectares is planted with oil palm. But this 10% of land produces more than a third, or between 33 and 40 percent, of all edible oils in the world. That's about 75 to 80 million metric tonnes. Now, let's look at soybean – it occupies over 100 million hectares of land but produces less than 60 million metric tonnes of oil.

Total land use by agricultural activities

Now let’s look at land use as a proportion of agricultural activity. That’s livestock (point to big wedge), about 80% of total agricultural land or 4.8 billion hectares. The rest or about 960 million are for other agricultural activities including over 330 million hectares of land used for vegetable oil crop I mentioned earlier.

That’s soybean, and that line there, 0.6% of the world’s total agricultural land, that’s the oil palm. Let's digest these facts for a minute. Has forest been cleared to plant oil palm? Yes, of course it has. Is most forest clearing because of oil palm? Not at all. In fact, if anyone says that palm oil is the cause of deforestation, we must wonder at their motivations. Why are they saying something that is patently untrue. But I’ll get to that later.

The growing world population

Ladies and Gentlemen, whether we like it or not, the world’s population is still growing. And thus, the demand for food. It is projected that demand for edible oils and protein feedstock will rise by over 40% in the next two decades.

But the one thing that is not increasing is land. So, the question is: how do we feed a growing population without expanding our footprint? How can we make the world’s most productive oil crop even better?

The oil palm genome

In 2023, we commercialised GenomeSelect® so that more growers can have access to our super-charged seeds. Every new generation of trees will bring more oil from the same land, without further land expansion.

Today’s palm is so efficient, you could replant land used to grow other oil crops, produce more oil AND return some land to forest. Keep that thought in mind as I go to the next slide.

Palm oil is versatile and ubiquitous

We know that about 50% of supermarket shelves are stocked with products that use palm oil as an ingredient. Because, it is versatile, it is accessible, and it can be produced sustainably by smallholders or large companies.

What this means is that palm oil is a potential replacement for other edible oils. Could this be the reason for the well-funded campaigns that were waged against palm oil for years? Was this highly efficient and versatile tree singled out so that its competitors could do better?

We traced some of those campaigns and often found that there were powerful lobbies behind them. Lobbies that support competing commodities.

You can argue that lobbyists are entitled to fund campaigns and that these campaigns support legitimate causes.

Yes, deforestation is a legitimate cause, and it is a global problem. But here’s the thing. When palm oil was condemned for decades as the primary cause of deforestation and for causing climate change, other commercial activities continued without hindrance. Other commodities with larger footprints were regarded as better for the planet. There was a time when even fossil fuels seemed better than palm oil.

These campaigns did a disservice to the planet, to humanity, because several ills were perpetuated. Until now… Until now when climate change has become catastrophic. These days, even the most strident critics of palm oil are admitting that, sustainably produced palm oil is actually a viable solution for this planet and its people.

The palm is a tree, and as such its carbon absorption capacity is higher than that of a shrub or a bush. As a tree, it is replanted once every 25 years, not every year like annual crops. As a tree, it bears fruits, and the oil it produces is from a fruit, just like coconuts, olives and avocados – unlike seed oils.

Beyond Zero

Ladies and gentlemen, in today's world, net zero and zero harm are no longer enough. We have to go beyond zero.

With our GenomeSelect® seeds, and our sustainability credentials honed over two decades, we at Guthrie have embraced the need for greater and faster change. This required a mindset shift – from “less or zero harm” to making “positive impacts”.

This commitment includes setting aside 100,000 hectares for conservation and restoration by 2030. About a fifth of our planted landbank. We are also working on a Regenerative Agriculture Framework with our partners.

As a perennial crop rather than cash crop, and unlike soya, rapeseed or sunflower, oil palm allows for a biodiverse coexistence, with natural corridors connecting wildlife habitats. If you want to know more, please come and visit our Carey Island plantation in Malaysia, where we have recorded over 60 species of birds.

But, even as we reduce our landbank, we expect to increase our yield. That is our commitment to sustainability. That is our commitment to responsible land use. And that is our commitment to future generations. All this is possible, because the crop we are working with is the oil palm tree.

Thank you.

Official Launch & Opening of Eco Business Park 7 Sales Gallery First Industrial Park in Parcel C of Malaysia Vision Valley 2.0

  • Official Launch & Opening of Eco Business Park 7 Sales Gallery First Industrial Park in Parcel C of Malaysia Vision Valley 2.0

EBP8

Negeri Sembilan: Eco Business Park 7 (EBP 7) today celebrated the official opening of its sales gallery, marking a key milestone as the first industrial development to be launched within Parcel C of the Malaysia Vision Valley 2.0 (MVV 2.0) masterplan.

The event was officiated by YAB Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Aminuddin bin Harun, Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan and Chairman of NS Corporation (NS Corp), together with senior representatives from Eco World Development Group Berhad (EcoWorld), SD Guthrie Berhad (SD Guthrie) and NS Corp.

EBP 7 is developed through a public–private partnership between EcoWorld, SD Guthrie via its wholly-owned subsidiary SD Guthrie Land Ventures Sdn Bhd (SDGLV), and NS Corp, the state agency responsible for coordinating and driving the MVV 2.0 masterplan. This collaboration brings together EcoWorld’s expertise in industrial park development, SD Guthrie’s extensive land resources, and NS Corp’s strategic planning vision for Negeri Sembilan. Together, the partners aim to create a high-value, future-ready industrial ecosystem that attracts quality investments, promotes sustainable growth and generates skilled employment for the state.

Located on approximately 1,195 acres of freehold land in Bukit Pelandok, Mukim Jimah, Port Dickson, the development carries an estimated Gross Development Value (GDV) of approximately RM3 billion. It forms a major component of Parcel C within the MVV 2.0 blueprint, an area earmarked for industrial, logistics and economic clusters that will strengthen Negeri Sembilan’s position as a competitive manufacturing and investment hub in Malaysia’s southern corridor.

EBP 7 is conceived as an integrated industrial development complemented by commercial hubs that create a self-sustaining business environment. It will offer a mix of medium-sized prime industrial lots and ready-built factories, alongside retail and service facilities designed to support the needs of businesses, entrepreneurs and workers. Strategically located near the proposed Nilai–Labu-Enstek Expressway (NLE), the park enjoys convenient access to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Port Klang and the PLUS Highway, ensuring efficient connectivity to major logistics routes across the country and beyond.

Catering to high-growth sectors such as aerospace, electrical and electronics, logistics and e-commerce, halal industries, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing, EBP 7 is expected to drive strong inflows of domestic and foreign direct investment (FDI) while contributing to MVV 2.0’s goal of fostering sustainable, high-value industrialisation that benefits both businesses and communities.

Larger parcels exceeding 5 acres are also available.

YAB Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Aminuddin Bin Harun, Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan and Chairman of NS Corp emphasised that the project is a flagship example of how strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors can turn vision into tangible economic value. “MVV 2.0 is a state-led, private sector–driven initiative aimed at creating quality employment and attracting high-impact industries. EBP 7, as the first industrial project in Parcel C, will serve as a catalyst and play a pivotal role in achieving these goals,” he said.

“EBP 7 is also stands to benefit from Negeri Sembilan’s position as part of Central Region Industrial Cluster which recently launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.” he added.

Dato’ Chang Khim Wah, President & Chief Executive Officer of EcoWorld said:
“The grand launch of Eco Business Park 7 marks the start of Parcel C’s transformation into a vibrant industrial and logistics hub. With our experience in delivering successful Eco Business Parks, we are confident that EBP 7 will attract quality investors, create skilled jobs and contribute meaningfully to Negeri Sembilan’s long-term economic growth.”

Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, Group Managing Director of SD Guthrie
added: “We are excited to see this collaboration take off with early interest boding well for our partnership. EBP 7 represents an important milestone in Guthrie's growth within the industrial parks segment; it marks the coming together of vision, strategy and execution. While Guthrie works to unlock the value of our landbank, we are delighted to be a part of Negri Sembilan's vision and the national development agenda.”

Looking ahead, EBP 7 will serve as a catalyst for new investment and technological advancement, fostering collaboration among industries, investors and local communities. The project underscores the collective commitment of EcoWorld, SD Guthrie and NS Corp to position Negeri Sembilan as a destination of choice for high value manufacturing and next-generation industries — a key step toward realising Malaysia Vision Valley 2.0’s ambition of sustainable and inclusive regional growth.

SD Guthrie Issues Malaysia's Largest Sustainability-linked Sukuk of RM2.1 billion

  • Overwhelming market interest with peak orderbook twice the initial issuance size

Petaling Jaya, 10 November 2025 – SD Guthrie Berhad's (Guthrie or the Group) RM2.1 billion sustainability-linked sukuk was mopped up by an enthusiastic market, with its RM700 million 10-year sukuk priced at 3.80% and RM1.4 billion 15-year sukuk at 3.97%.

The issuance was successfully priced following a book-building exercise on 27 October 2025, attracting overwhelming investor interest with the peak orderbook reaching twice the initial issuance size of RM1.5 billion. With such strong investor interest, the deal was upsized to RM2.1 billion to cater to the strong market demand and enable wider participation – making Guthrie’s maiden Sustainability-linked sukuk the plantation industry’s largest Malaysian Ringgit issuance, and also Malaysia’s largest Sustainability-linked sukuk issuance to-date.

“The success of this exercise underscores investors’ trust and confidence in Guthrie's management team and the strategies in place to ensure responsible and sustainable growth,” said Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, Guthrie's Group Managing Director. "We had expected healthy interest in our sukuk, but this level of support in a market that has recently seen several large issuances, is indeed encouraging.”

The issuance is part of the Group’s RM5.0 billion Islamic notes issuance programme which was lodged with the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) on 19 September 2025.The funds raised will cater for the Group’s near term funding requirements which includes the redemption of the perpetual sukuk in March 2026 currently with an interest rate of 5.65% resulting in significant annual interest savings to the Group of approximately RM42 million.

The sukuk has specific Sustainability Performance Targets to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% across Guthrie's global plantation upstream operations, as well as to maintain 100% Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification. These targets align with Guthrie’s inaugural Sustainable Finance Framework, which has been assigned a “Gold” Impact Assessment by MARC Solutions Sdn Bhd.

Guthrie produces 2.16 million metric tonnes of palm oil annually, from its 65 mills and 234 estates in Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. Sime Darby Property and SD Guthrie to Develop Next-Gen Industrial Corridor

  • Collaboration to create long-term economic growth through the planning and phased development of approximately 3,000 acres in Selangor

Project GarnetAra Damansara, 7 November 2025 – Sime Darby Property Berhad (“Sime Darby Property”) and SD Guthrie Berhad (“Guthrie”) have agreed to develop a next-generation industrial and logistics hub within a 3,000 acre master development plan in Kuala Selangor, Selangor, through a 50:50 joint venture (“JV”).

The planned development will begin with 1,000 acres within Guthrie’s Jalan Acob, Bukit Kerayong and Bukit Cherakah estates through the JV that will be formalised by the parties via the establishment of a special-purpose vehicle (“SPV”).

The development is located in a prime growth area, strategically positioned 40 minutes from Port Klang, and within close proximity to Bandar Bukit Raja (“BBR”), an award-winning township by Sime Darby Property, with direct access to major transport links including the West Coast Expressway (“WCE”) and the future East Coast Rail Link (“ECRL”).

Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, Guthrie’s Group Managing Director, said, “This JV reinforces Guthrie's new strategic business direction to forge synergistic alliances that unlock the inherent value in our landbank, particularly in this part of Selangor, while enabling sustainable growth and development for the state.”

Mohamad Helmy noted that Guthrie has actively participated in nation building for decades. “Our contributions towards nation building are all around us – critical national assets located on land that was ours – such as the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the country's administrative capital, Putrajaya. Guthrie will always support national aspirations, but at the same time, safeguarding the interests of our shareholders.” He added that Guthrie is excited to be part of this inland development belt that integrates industry, logistics, and sustainability to create a future ready industrial ecosystem.

Dato’ Seri Azmir Merican, Group Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Sime Darby Property, said, “This opportunity enables Sime Darby Property to undertake holistic master planning and develop future-ready townships to capture the next wave of industrial and logistics demand, driving sustainable economic growth across Selangor’s industrial corridor. Its strong connectivity enhances our value proposition to provide integrated industrial solutions for regional supply chains and high-growth industries. This strategic JV with Guthrie positions both companies to deliver long-term value while strengthening Selangor’s position as a key driver of Malaysia’s industrial growth.”

This partnership aims to leverage Sime Darby Property’s proven capability in developing sustainable, high-value industrial ecosystems that attract world-class partners and further strengthen Selangor’s industrial and logistics landscape through flagship developments such as BBR, a 5,333-acre integrated township known for its sustainable design and thriving industrial ecosystem.

With close to 60% of its landbank allocated for industrial use, BBR is home to Malaysia’s first GreenRE Platinum-rated managed industrial park and has become a preferred destination for multinational corporations seeking ready infrastructure, connectivity and ESG-aligned developments.

Building on the momentum of the Guthrie–Sime Darby Property Carey Island JV announced earlier this year, this latest collaboration between the parties supports a regional growth corridor strategy that extends from Klang and Kapar towards Carey Island, linking inland industrial activities with the state’s emerging port-city ambitions. With the Government's plans to develop a new world-class port off Carey Island, capitalising on its strategic location neighbouring Port Klang and Pulau Indah, Selangor is positioned to reinforce its standing as Malaysia’s leading maritime and logistics hub.

Aligning with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan blueprint, the latest development also reflects both companies’ shared vision to multiply long-term value for their stakeholders. This holistic development corridor will enable efficient supply chain clustering, stimulate regional enterprise, and generate sustainable socioeconomic value for surrounding communities.

The Companies will make further announcements as material developments occur.

SD Guthrie Group Managing Director, Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha Steps Down from Current Role

  • Current Deputy Managing Director, Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad, will take over as Group Managing Director on 1 January 2026

Petaling Jaya, 5 November 2025 – SD Guthrie Berhad’s Group Managing Director, Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha is stepping down from his current role, effective 31 December 2025. From 1 January 2026, he will serve the Group as Advisor to the Board of Directors until his planned retirement on 30 June 2026.

Mohamad Helmy will be succeeded by Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad, current Deputy Group Managing Director of Guthrie, who will take over as Group Managing Director on 1 January 2026.

“We want to thank Mohamad Helmy for his sterling service as Group Managing Director of Guthrie over the last six-and-a-half years. He led the Group through some challenging times but is leaving on a high note with both operational and financial performance moving in the right trajectory,” said Guthrie Chairman Tan Sri Dr Nik Norzrul Thani Nik Hassan Thani. He also noted that Guthrie has strong succession plans in place for all its senior management, a discipline which is very much in evidence during this seamless and planned transition between the incoming and outgoing Group Managing Directors.

Mohamad Helmy was appointed Group Managing Director on 1 July 2019, of the then Sime Darby Plantation Berhad, taking over from Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh. In the first half of his tenure, Guthrie faced several challenges, from 2019’s plummeting CPO prices, to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, the ban on Guthrie’s products in the United States and a debilitating worker shortage due to border closures. Against the backdrop of very low CPO prices in 2019, together with Mohd Haris, he crafted the strategy to increase contributions from the Group’s Downstream segment, to reduce dependence on commodity prices.

Having steered Guthrie through these prolonged crises, in 2024, Mohamad Helmy led the management team in the Group’s rebranding exercise, and its realignment and diversification initiatives, with the establishment of two new business verticals – Renewable Energy and Industrial Development.

Mohamad Helmy will be celebrated for his tenacity and vision, his commitments to driving performance in Guthrie, and innovation in the plantation industry. In 2020, as the many challenges percolated, Mohamad Helmy told his colleagues to “never waste a good crisis”, and established the “Infinity Taskforce”, the initiative to modernise, mechanise and automate plantation operations where possible. As a result of these efforts, today Guthrie’s land to man ratio (a measure of efficiency) has improved significantly to 13.5 ha:1 from 10.5 ha:1 pre-covid, a reduction of 6,000 workers. The “Infinity Taskforce” continues to meet regularly

Mohd Haris joined Sime Darby Berhad in 2014, as the Head of Global Trading & Marketing. Following the demerger of the Sime Darby Group in November 2017, Mohd Haris was appointed Chief Operating Officer of the then Sime Darby Plantation Berhad’s Downstream division.

He played a pivotal role in the rebranding of the Downstream division to Sime Darby Oils (SDO) in 2019. He was appointed SDO’s first Managing Director in May of that year and oversaw its robust growth, almost doubling profits over three years.

In January 2024, Mohd Haris was promoted to Group Chief Operating Officer (GCOO), taking on a wider role that included Guthrie’s vast Upstream operations. He took a hands-on approach and visited all Upstream regions in Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, working closely with estate and mill operations. On 1 September 2025, Mohd Haris was appointed Deputy Group Managing Director, in preparation for the handover from Mohamad Helmy.

Mohd Haris has led numerous operational excellence, governance, digitalisation, health & safety, as well as talent development initiatives.

He began his career in 1995 with Cargill in Malaysia, trading palm oil, and later leading copra sourcing in the Philippines and coconut oil marketing in Europe. In 2001, he joined Nestlé in Malaysia, London, and Singapore, where he established the Commodity Procurement Centre for Asia, Oceania, and Africa as General Manager & Head of Global Oils and Fats. In 2010, Mohd Haris joined Unilever to set up its global commodity risk management unit for oils and fats, managing trading teams in the US, Switzerland, and Singapore.

Mohd Haris continues to serve as the Chairman of the board of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) and the Palm Oil Refiners Association of Malaysia (PORAM). He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC).

“We are confident that Mohd Haris will take the Group to new heights as he leads the management team to implement the Board-approved enterprise strategy. We are also grateful that Mohamad Helmy is continuing to serve as Advisor to the Board for the first six months of 2026, lending his years of experience for Guthrie.

On behalf of the Board and the Guthrie family, I wish Mohamad Helmy the very best for the future and thank him for his untiring service and dedication to the Group. And I congratulate Mohd Haris on his appointment as our new Group Managing Director,” Nik Norzrul added.
