Save the Malayan Tapir

Petaling Jaya, 11 May 2026 – SD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie) announced its intent to collaborate with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) Peninsular Malaysia as a strategic partner in advancing the conservation of the Malayan Tapir.
The Malayan Tapir or scientifically known as Tapirus indicus is classified an endangered species on The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List, and the Red List of Mammals for Peninsular Malaysia. Its population is declining with fewer than 2,500 mature individuals remaining in the wild as of assessment published in 2016 (IUCN).
The species is a uniquely significant within Malaysia’s natural heritage, and continues to face increasing threats from habitat fragmentation, land-use changes, and other environmental pressures. Addressing these challenges requires a coordinated and inclusive approach involving government agencies, the private sector, and local communities.
Speaking at a recent event to celebrate World Tapir Day, Guthrie's Chief Sustainability Officer, Rashyid Redza Anwarudin, called for a holistic approach by government agencies, the private sector and communities to collaborate on the conservation of wildlife like the Malayan Tapir.
“The Malayan Tapir is a unique and important part of our nation’s biodiversity, yet it faces growing challenges that require a more collective and coordinated response. We are excited to partner with PERHILITAN in this collaboration, which will bring together PERHILITAN’s policy leadership and technical expertise, and Guthrie’s platforms, reach and community engagement capabilities,” he said.
Guthrie’s conservation efforts are anchored in a landscape-level approach that integrates biodiversity protection within its operational footprint. As of 2025, the Group has conserved and restored 51,212 hectares of land across its operations and surrounding landscapes, supporting critical habitats and ecological connectivity for wildlife, including the Malayan Tapir.
These efforts are part of a broader commitment to conserve and restore more than 100,000 hectares by 2030, with a focus on protecting High Conservation Value areas and strengthening ecological corridors across Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Solomon Islands.
Complementing habitat protection, Guthrie continues to strengthen its species conservation approach through active restoration and ongoing biodiversity monitoring initiatives across its operating landscapes. In 2025, 19 camera traps were deployed within estates to support ongoing wildlife monitoring and inform conservation management actions. These efforts have recorded the presence of rare, threatened, and endangered (RTE) species such as the Malayan Tapir, and others.
Through its Conservation & Biodiversity Unit, Guthrie aims to support the implementation of the Malayan Tapir Conservation Action Plan (MATCAP), particularly under the Communication, Education, Participation and Awareness (CEPA) component.
Key areas of collaboration include:
• Supporting habitat protection and ecological corridors within operational landscapes
• Organising joint field-based conservation initiatives
• Implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to tapir populations
• Enhancing awareness among estate management and surrounding communities
The partnership is envisioned as a long-term collaboration, beginning with this strategic alignment and potentially progressing towards a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the future.

SD Guthrie Chalks Up Net Profit of RM560 million in Solid Start to FY2026
Petaling Jaya, 7 May 2026 – SD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie or the Group) reported a net profit of RM560 million on the back of a profit before interest and tax (PBIT) of RM807 million in the first quarter of its financial year ending 31 December 2026 (1Q FY2026).
The Group's overall performance was supported by stronger contributions from its various business segments. The Group’s Upstream segment recorded a PBIT of RM529 million despite being impacted by lower realised crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel (PK) prices, which registered a 10% and 8% decline respectively from the previous corresponding quarter.
SD Guthrie International (SDGI), the Group’s Downstream segment, started the year on a strong note, recording a 43% year-on-year (YoY) increase of PBIT amounting to RM109 million. The encouraging performance was underpinned by higher sales volumes and positive margin recovery in its Asia Pacific and European operations, alongside stronger contributions from joint ventures.
The Industrial Development segment delivered RM160 million in PBIT for 1Q FY2026 from an outright third-party land sale.

Chairman, Tan Sri Dr Nik Norzrul Thani Nik Hassan Thani said:
“Amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Guthrie’s diversified portfolio delivered a resilient performance to record a good start to the year. The Group’s new leadership offers the stability on the back of a challenging macroeconomic backdrop and will continue to bring renewed momentum to fuel the Group’s growth ambitions.”
Group Managing Director, Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad said:
“Guthrie chalked up a commendable net profit for the first quarter and will look to continue improving profitability across our diversified portfolio for the remainder of this year. While market conditions remain unpredictable at best, the team is focused on what we can control – productivity, quality and costs – to sustain and build upon last year's strong performance.
Whilst Guthrie is cautious in the challenging operating environment, we are well positioned to look ahead with confidence, leveraging on our strong balance sheet, sound strategies and effective execution.”
OUTLOOK FOR FY2026:
CPO prices are expected to remain supported in the near term, underpinned by weather-related supply risks and the conflict in the Middle East. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted global supply chains, causing an increase in energy and fuel prices impacting direct and indirect costs, which include logistics, fertilisers and energy. The expansion of regional biodiesel mandates will structurally support CPO prices in the near term. However, uncertainties persist around the implementation readiness to support these mandates.
Guthrie continues to focus on operational discipline across its upstream estates, prioritising yield optimisation and cost management to navigate near-term volatility. The Downstream segment remains focused on margin protection, leveraging its integrated value chain and geographic diversification, to navigate shifting demand patterns across key markets. In parallel, the Industrial Development and Renewable Energy segments are expected to support longer-term earnings resilience and diversification.
The Group remains cautious on its outlook for FY2026 amidst an inherently volatile and policy-sensitive operating environment.

SD Guthrie Launches ELAEIS GARDENS

Petaling Jaya, 5 May 2026 – SD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie) today announced the official launch of “ELAEIS GARDENS”, a rebranded eco‑destination offering immersive experiences rooted in nature, heritage, and responsible production.
This represents a move from Guthrie’s traditionally private, functional estates to accessible, working landscapes designed for discovery, guided by four core pillars: Stay, Dine, Golf and Experience. It also reflects Guthrie’s commitment to openness and transparency, inviting the public to experience sustainability in practice—the Guthrie way.
At the heart of ELAEIS GARDENS is the philosophy of “Di Sisi Alam” (Alongside Nature), which underscores Guthrie’s belief that industrial operations can coexist with the environment. Through this approach, ELAEIS GARDENS offers spaces where visitors can unwind, reconnect with nature, and gain a deeper understanding of palm oil production carried out responsibly on the ground.
The name Elaeis is derived from Elaeis guineensis, the scientific genus of the oil palm, symbolising Guthrie’s deep roots in the industry and its pride in the crop that has shaped Malaysia’s development for over a century. The new brand reflects this heritage, presenting a warm, inviting brand that balances the structured form of the palm frond with the softness of a garden—signalling a transition from closed gates to open hospitality.
Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad, Group Managing Director of Guthrie, said ELAEIS GARDENS’ rebrand reflects the Group’s commitment to openness, responsible land stewardship, and meaningful engagement with the public.
“ELAEIS GARDENS represents an evolution in how we share our landscapes and our story. The brand represents our commitment to responsible ecotourism and community connection. It reflects our belief that it is possible to balance large-scale palm oil operations with genuine hospitality, education, and care for nature.
"Guided by our philosophy of Di Sisi Alam, we are opening our plantation landscapes as places for learning, connection, and discovery, while continuing to uphold the highest standards of responsible production. This is about transforming heritage preserved into heritage shared,” he said.
EG is currently made up of a nine‑location commitment across Malaysia, offering diverse experiences tailored to different lifestyles and interests. The inaugural and flagship location is Carey Island, Selangor, featuring heritage bungalows that offer guest accommodation and event spaces, an 18‑hole golf course, the “Know Your Palm Oil” programme, a museum and the Dapo Carey restaurant.
Other locations include Merlimau and Eco Retreat in Melaka, Sua Betong in Negeri Sembilan, Tangkak and Layang‑Layang in Johor, Dublin Golf Club in Kulim, Kedah, Rajawali in Bintulu, Sarawak, and Tasik Impian in Kunak, Sabah. Visitors can enjoy authentic Malaysian cuisine at Dapo Carey and Dapo Devon located in Melaka, as well as stay in heritage or nature‑based accommodations.
