SD Guthrie and Sime Darby Property Advance Strategic Industrial Corridor into Next Phase

  • The partnership formalised critical milestones including a proposed land transaction involving approximately 1,021.93 acres within Bukit Kerayong Estate

Petaling Jaya, 15 July 2026 – SD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie) and Sime Darby Property Berhad have advanced their strategic collaboration into its next phase with key agreements to accelerate the development of a next-generation industrial and logistics corridor in Kuala Selangor.

Following the earlier announcement dated 7 November 2025 of a 50:50 joint venture to develop approximately 3,000 acres of land, the partnership has formalised critical milestones which entail a proposed land transaction of approximately 1,021.93 acres within Bukit Kerayong Estate in Kapar, Selangor.

The land, which forms part of the larger master development, will be acquired for approximately RM798.3 million, enabling the project to move into its implementation phase.

Under the joint venture, Guthrie and Sime Darby Property will each invest up to RM100 million for a 50% equity participation, reinforcing both parties’ commitment to jointly unlock the long-term value of the landbank while driving strategic industrial growth in Selangor.

The Bukit Kerayong development is envisioned as a next-generation, heavy industrial park anchored by logistics and renewable energy infrastructure, positioning it as a catalytic node within Selangor’s evolving industrial ecosystem. Strategically located within a high-growth zone which includes Malaysia’s key maritime gateway of Port Klang and supported by major transport infrastructure such as the West Coast Expressway (WCE) and the upcoming East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), the development is set to support high-volume industrial activity and play a pivotal role in reinforcing Selangor’s position as a leading industrial and logistics hub.

Guthrie’s President & Group Chief Executive Officer, Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad, said the progress underscores Guthrie’s commitment to unlocking value through strategic partnerships.

“This collaboration reflects our continued focus on monetising our landbank through synergistic alliances that generate sustainable, long-term returns. The Bukit Kerayong development represents a significant opportunity to catalyse economic growth in the region, support industrial and commercial activities, and create lasting value for stakeholders while aligning with national industrial aspirations,” he said.

Dato’ Seri Azmir Merican, Group Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Sime Darby Property, said the partnership highlights clear steps towards creating a future-ready industrial development by the two companies with a shared heritage.

“This next phase moves our partnership from vision to execution. By integrating Sime Darby Property's expertise in sustainable master planning with SD Guthrie's strategic landbank, we are building an industrial corridor equipped to meet evolving supply chain demands. This development will directly attract high-value investments, facilitate significant job creation, and reinforce Malaysia's industrial competitiveness," he said.

The Bukit Kerayong development builds on the strong foundation established by Sime Darby Property’s flagship integrated township, Bandar Bukit Raja, and complements the broader regional development strategy that extends towards Carey Island. Together with the previously announced Carey Island collaboration, the projects form part of a connected industrial corridor spanning Klang, Kapar and Kuala Selangor, supporting the Selangor State Government’s ambitions to strengthen its logistics, manufacturing and port ecosystem.

Aligned with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan, the integrated corridor is designed to enable efficient supply chain clustering, attract high-value industries and generate sustainable socioeconomic impact for surrounding communities.

The phased development approach ensures that both companies can respond to evolving market demand while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability, infrastructure readiness and long-term value creation.

With the latest agreements now in place, the joint venture is set to commence the next stage of development, further advancing one of Selangor’s most significant industrial growth initiatives.

Sime Darby Plantation Awarded RSPO Certification

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 October 2008 - A business unit of Sime Darby Plantation Sdn Bhd has been awarded the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Certification, the first step in the company’s effort towards meeting the highest standards of sustainability for the production of palm oil.

The business unit – its Sandakan Bay strategic operating unit (SOU) – was successfully audited by BSi Management Systems and subsequently certified by the Executive Board and Certification Board of the RSPO.

This achievement will give the world’s largest oil palm plantation company a bigger boost as it sets out to expand its markets in Europe and other parts of the world where there is a surge in demand for edible oils produced under sustainable conditions.

This is a significant achievement for the team that has been working towards obtaining RSPO Certification. It underlines the continuous effort by Sime Darby to maintain the highest standards in our operations,” Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zubir Murshid, Sime Darby’s President and Chief Executive, said.

The 12,000 ha Sandakan Bay SOU is located in eastern Sabah. It produces about 63,000 tonnes of RSPO certified crude palm oil (CPO) and 16,000 tonnes of palm kernel oil. Four other SOUs – Mostyn, Binaung, Giram and Merotai – have been audited by SIRIM and are awaiting RSPO Certification. They are among Sime Darby’s 65 SOUs. An SOU is a business unit comprising a mill and its supply base of one or more estates. Sime Darby also supports local communities by engaging smallholders to supply palm fruits to its SOUs.

“Nevertheless,” Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zubir said, “this is just another phase in our journey towards achieving full sustainability. This is a continuing journey for us and we are working towards full certification and we are confident that by 2011 all our 65 strategic operating units will be RSPO certified.’’

The first shipment of certified and traceable palm oil will be shipped from Sabah to Unimills B.V, in Holland, by the end of October. Unimills, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sime Darby Bhd, is a leading edge supplier of tailor-made vegetable oils in Europe.

RPSO Certification is a rigorous process in which the entire operations and processes of a particular business unit are thoroughly investigated. A company’s agricultural practices as well as its social and environmental management policies are assessed.

For Sime Darby’s certification process, the company’s Biodiversity Assessment and the Social Impact Assessment Programmes were assessed, among others. The Biodiversity Assessment that is carried out in each unit investigates ways of enhancing the biodiversity within each area, looks at the area’s river buffer zones, mud pools, hot springs and surrounding natural forest areas. The Social Impact Assessment looks at management of plantation employees, their welfare, enhancement of their welfare, surrounding communities and other relevant stakeholders. The RSPO was created in direct response to the rapid expansion of the palm oil industry globally and the need for this expansion to be done sustainably. The RSPO has brought together members of this global industry and has set the standards for sustainable production of palm oil engraved in eight key principles and 39 criteria. This comprehensive protocol on sustainable production was developed after rigorous consultations with various investors, producers, manufacturers and NGOs. A pioneer member of the RSPO, Sime Darby Plantation owns and operates 208 palm oil estates and 65 palm oil mills in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Sime Darby Reports Pre-tax Profit of RM1.3 Billion for 1Q FY08/09

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 November 2008 - Sime Darby Berhad reported a pre-tax profit of RM1.3 billion for the Q1 FY08/09, an increase of 23 per cent over the same period during the last financial year.

The Group recorded a net profit after tax and minority interest of RM867 million, an increase of 44 per cent compared to Q1 FY07/08.

This improved performance in the quarter under review was due in large part to the strong showing of the Plantation Division. The division registered a 39 per cent increase in operating profit to RM968 million on the back of higher crude palm oil prices compared to Q1 FY07/08.

In addition, the Industrial Division also recorded an increase in operating profit of 39 per cent to RM247 million due to the stronger performance of the South East Asian and Australasian operations.

The Property Division’s operating profit however, declined by 30 per cent to RM58 million as the sector continues to experience a more challenging business environment.

Commenting on the results, Dato' Seri Ahmad Zubir Murshid, President & Group Chief Executive of Sime Darby, said: “Although we are pleased with the Q1 results, we are aware that going forward, global economic growth is expected to weaken significantly. Hence, FY08/09 will be a very challenging year for Sime Darby especially for the plantation, property and motors divisions. Nevertheless, Sime Darby’s portfolio of stable cash flow assets as well as growth businesses provides the right balance for the Group to weather the full impact of the economic down cycle.’’

Dato' Seri Ahmad Zubir noted that in these challenging times, managing costs will also be critical particularly in the Plantation Division. As such, Sime Darby has embarked on a cost savings initiative which includes consolidating its support services and reprioritising spending on non-essentials.

On the flip side, the more challenging economic environment will provide Sime Darby with significant investment opportunities. “There will be once in a life time opportunities to acquire undervalued assets particularly with our strong balance sheet. In addition, the economic downturn will also provide an excellent opportunity for us to acquire human resource talent,” he said.

Sime Darby Sets Up Country's First Mechanised Paddy Farm In The Northern Corridor

BAGAN SERAI, 5 February 2009 - Malaysia’s first fully mechanized paddy farm was launched today, part of a move by Sime Darby Berhad to bring innovation to agriculture in the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER). Once fully implemented, the mechanised paddy plantations using superior seeds will result in higher yields and thus help to address the government’s concerns over Food Security issues while expanding Sime Darby’s footprint in food production.

The 200 ha farm set within the Kerian/Sg Manik rice granary area will be a template for other paddy farms which the diversified multinational hopes to operate in other parts of the country. Sime Darby said today that it was also prepared to share its expertise and innovation with smallholders and rehabilitate idle agriculture land in the NCER.

The project was launched by YAB Dato' Seri Abdullah Hj Ahmad Badawi, Prime Minister of Malaysia and witnessed by Sime Darby Bhd Chairman, Tun Musa Hitam. Also present were YB Dato' Mustapha Mohamed, Minister of Agriculture & Agro-based Industries and Dato Seri Ahmad Zubir Murshid, President and Group Chief Executive of Sime Darby Berhad.

Some 168,000 Ha of land within the NCER is currently cultivated with paddy but local farmers mostly operate on a small scale with an average of 1.06Ha per farm with yields of between 3 and 4 MT/Ha annually. In order to facilitate mechanisation and thus greater efficiency, it would be necessary to form larger contiguous parcels of paddy plantations. Sime Darby has proposed a co-operative structure to facilitate the creation of such paddy plantations, which would allow local farmers to participate as shareholders in the venture with the option of working the fields.

“When we announced our intention to venture into paddy cultivation, many were sceptical but the reality is that, for us, this is an extension of our existing core business. We are planters and we are in the food business,” Tun Musa said at the launch event. He added that from the country’s perspective food security is a critical issue and any initiative by the government to address it should receive the support it rightly deserves.

Food Security is an issue that has been raised in recent years and Malaysia’s dependence on rice imports has been viewed as a critical area of concern. Malaysia hopes to achieve self-sufficiency by producing 90% of the country’s rice needs and reducing imports to just 10% by 2010. Currently about 25% of all the rice consumed in the country is imported. “Sime Darby’s venture into paddy cultivation will assist the government in this quest to achieve selfsufficiency,” Tun Musa added.

Sime Darby’s RM12.5 million farm will feature state of the art irrigation systems, a fully mechanized paddy nursery, boom sprayers and a combined harvester designed specifically for paddy. With the improved irrigation system and these other innovations, Sime Darby is confident that not just paddy yields but also harvest cycles will increase. It is projected that the farm will produce yields of 5 to 6 metric tonnes within the first three cycles and 8 to 10 MT from the fourth cycle onwards.

From Sime Darby’s perspective, Ahmad Zubir said that the mechanized paddy farm in Bagan Serai is another step the Group is taking to grow its food production business within the plantations division. Although the cultivation of oil palm is still the mainstay of the Plantation Division and will constitute at least 75% of commercial crop cultivation, the remaining 25% will be used for other commercial crops including paddy.

"This project in Perak is the first and we hope to replicate this across Peninsular Malaysia and in Sabah and Sarawak in the near future," Ahmad Zubir said. "We will extend our expertise and services to smallholders in the area and we hope to work with the state authorities to replicate this model in abandoned paddy farms and idle land across the NCER," he added at the launch today.

Sime Darby was the master planner of the NCER which was launched in mid- 2007. Since then, the implementation of one of the country’s growth corridors has been handed over to the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA). Sime Darby, has identified the NCER as the ideal area to spearhead its move into paddy cultivation.

After declaring open the model paddy farm, the Prime Minister opened the Paddy Gallery in Gedong today. The gallery charts the history of paddy cultivation in the country, the processes that have been used as well as a showcase of new mechanization techniques, equipment and irrigation systems.

Meanwhile, Sime Darby Plantation today also signed a collaborative research agreement with the China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI). The CNRRI is one of the world's leading authorities on rice research and this collaboration is expected to result in the production of superior quality grains that are not only cost efficient but also capable of producing higher yields.

Sime Darby Plantation Launches Mangrove Research Centre in Carey Island

CAREY ISLAND, SELANGOR, 17 February 2009 - Sime Darby Plantation Sdn Bhd today launched its Mangrove Research Centre (MRC) which is the first centre for mangrove research in Malaysia.

Located within the company's West Estate here, MRC will be the platform for research on the mangrove ecosystem and coastal zone management. It was officially launched by Sime Darby Plantation Managing Director Dato' Azhar Abdul Hamid.

The establishment of MRC was one of the outcomes of the collaboration on biodiversity of flora and fauna between Sime Darby Research Centre and the Institute of Biological Sciences and Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences of Universiti Malaya (UM). The collaboration which started in 2003 with five environmental projects concerning the flora and fauna of Carey Island was renewed in August last year with funding of more than RM500,000 from Sime Darby Plantation.

Under the new collaboration, six new projects - four of which are related to mangrove and coastal management - have been identified to be carried out by UM researchers and scientists until 2010.

In his speech, Dato' Azhar said being the first research centre of its kind, MRC has the potential of playing a pivotal role as a resource centre on mangrove and coastal zone management for both local and international researchers.

" The outcome or findings generated from the various researches that has been or will be conducted at MRC will not only be used for our benefit as a plantation company. The entire mangrove ecosystem within Malaysia as well as in our neighbouring countries stand to benefit, especially in learning how best to manage this intricate eco-system to ensure its survival", he said.

As a corporate citizen, Dato' Azhar said it was the social responsibility of Sime Darby Plantation to contribute to the conservation of the environment that it operates in for the mutual benefit of its business and the community.

Realising the importance of mangrove ecosystem to humankind and the environment as a whole and the need to educate the community on safeguarding mangrove forest from extinction, Sime Darby Plantation, in one of its CSR efforts also launched the Mangrove Brigade today.

The Brigade members, comprising students of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Ladang Barat, Carey Island and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ladang Barat, Carey Island, will be exposed to the various life forms that exist within a mangrove forest.

" By imparting knowledge to the young through activities that engage them, we hope that the future of mangrove forests will be in safe hands", added Dato' Azhar.

Brigade members will actively observe and document life forms in the mangrove forests of Carey Island, with the assistance of UM undergraduates. The students will learn about the role of mangrove forests in the eco-system, benefits of the forest and ways and means to conserve and manage the delicate eco-system.

A total of 32 students form the initial Mangrove Brigade and activities will be carried out throughout the year.
