SD Guthrie and MBI Selangor Sign MOU for Strategic Carey Island Development

  • A transformative collaboration to drive regional growth within the Integrated Development Region in South Selangor (IDRISS)

Petaling Jaya, 26 February 2026 – SD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie) and Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation) (MBI Selangor) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore a strategic collaboration for an integrated development in Carey Island.

The MOU establishes a framework for both parties to conduct feasibility studies and develop master planning for a minimum of 2,500 acres, with potential expansion up to 5,000 acres within Carey Island Estate.

The proposed development in Carey Island will form a critical component of the proposed Third Port initiative, the Carey Island Port, within the Carey Island Special Economic Zone (SEZ). This will also reinforce the positioning of the SEZ as a catalytic economic hub, enabling the generation of high‑value economic activities on Carey Island while supporting the broader growth agenda for Southern Selangor.

“The partnership between MBI Selangor and Guthrie underscores the State Government’s determination to unlock the strategic potential of Carey Island. Through the combination of strong institutional capacity and proven industry experience, this collaboration will accelerate the development of the Carey Island Special Economic Zone, stimulate high‑value economic activity and generate wider opportunities that uplift communities in southern of Selangor”, said YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, Menteri Besar of Selangor.

Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad, Guthrie’s Group Managing Director said this latest venture is a strategic opportunity for Guthrie to participate meaningfully in the next phase of Selangor's economic growth, while prioritising sustainable development aligned with its "Beyond Zero" sustainability framework.

“A strategic and sustainable approach to developing Carey Island is critical – both to stimulate economic growth while preserving the irreplaceable value of the island to the plantation industry, and its unique heritage. This includes protecting its rich biodiversity and ensuring the needs and well-being of local communities are prioritised.

“This development demonstrates how strategic land stewardship can unlock economic potential while preserving environmental integrity and social balance, creating lasting impact for the state and its stakeholders,” he said.

MBI Selangor’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Ts. Saipolyazan M. Yusop highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership and reaffirmed MBI Selangor’s role in advancing sustainable growth for Selangor.

"As the State’s investment arm, MBI Selangor is committed to advancing strategic developments that generate long‑term value for Selangor. This collaboration will strengthen Carey Island’s road connectivity, infrastructure and utilities which are key enablers that will catalyse new economic activity within the Special Economic Zone. By leveraging our mandate alongside Guthrie’s proven expertise, we are laying the groundwork for a development that will benefit businesses, investors and the people of Selangor,” he said.

The collaboration marks a significant milestone in the growth of Guthrie’s new industrial development segment, diversifying beyond its core plantation operations and unlocking long-term value from its strategically located landbank across the country.
