Yayasan Sime Darby Contributes RM1 Million To Support Cyclone Related Flood Relief Efforts in Sumatra
Petaling Jaya, 12 February 2026 – Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) has committed RM1 million in humanitarian aid to support communities affected by the cyclone related floods in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The contribution made possible through the continued support of YSD’s donor companies Sime Darby Berhad, SD Guthrie Berhad, and Sime Darby Property Berhad, will be channelled through MERCY Malaysia to deliver targeted relief to affected communities.
Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Imran Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, Chairman of Yayasan Sime Darby, marked the commitment by handing over a mock cheque to Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, President of MERCY Malaysia today. Also present were Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, Advisor to the Guthrie's Board of Directors and former YSD Governing Council Member; Ms Caroline Russell, YSD Governing Council Member and Dr Hjh Yatela Zainal Abidin, Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Sime Darby.
The rare cyclone triggered severe floods and landslides, with reported impacts across 51 districts and cities. As of December 2025, Indonesian officials reported 1,106 fatalities, 217 missing persons, and more than 1.05 million displaced individuals.
Through this RM1 million contribution, YSD and MERCY Malaysia will support post disaster relief assistance over six months from January to June 2026. Assistance will include the construction of temporary shelters, the installation of clean water support systems and community latrine in Aceh Tamiang. Hygiene kits and essential non-food item kits will also be distributed to affected families in Aceh Tamiang, Langkat and Padang Pariaman. The initiative also includes the deployment of MERCY Malaysia’s rapid assessment teams to support on ground delivery.
Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Imran said, “Thousands in Northern Sumatra have been displaced, with many still struggling to find shelter and access clean water, healthcare, and other basic necessities. Through our RM1 million contribution, and in partnership with our trusted long‑term partner of more than a decade, we aim to support swift and coordinated humanitarian efforts to ease suffering and help restore hope.”
Encik Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad, Group Managing Director of Guthrie said, “Guthrie hopes this contribution to MERCY Malaysia will help to accelerate on-ground relief delivery in North Sumatra, especially for safe shelter and basic household needs. MERCY Malaysia's expertise in disaster relief work is very much appreciated, and we are grateful for their support.”
Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus said, “This contribution strengthens our ability to respond in a challenging operating environment, and to deliver essential shelter support, clean water access and critical household supplies to communities most affected.”
Today’s contribution builds on YSD’s long standing partnership with MERCY Malaysia, spanning more than a decade with a total commitment of RM12.2 million since 2014. The collaboration has supported international humanitarian responses including the Nepal earthquake in 2015, the Lombok and Palu disasters in 2018, COVID 19 assistance to India in 2021, and Türkiye’s earthquake recovery efforts in 2023. Domestically, both organisations have also worked together on emergency relief and temporary shelter support for disaster affected communities in Malaysia, including the 2014 Kelantan floods, the 2015 Sabah earthquake, and other flood and disaster responses over the years.
