Carey Island

About Carey Island

Carey Island, located off the west coast of Selangor, Malaysia, is a historically rich and agriculturally significant island developed over a century ago from mangrove swamps. Spanning about one-fifth the size of modern Singapore, it was purchased by Sir Valentine Carey in the early 1900s and transformed into a thriving plantation. Today, oil palm is the island’s main crop, with SD Guthrie (Guthrie) owning 79% of the land—approximately 28,646 acres—where all plantations are 100% certified sustainable to international standards.

The island plays a vital role in Malaysia’s palm oil industry and hosts two estates, two palm oil mills, a kernel crushing plant, a biodiesel facility, R&D centres, and a robotics and innovation hub. Palm oil from Carey Island is processed in nearby refineries in Teluk Panglima Garang and Port Klang, serving global markets. The island also features 14 heritage-listed buildings, a biodiversity park, and protected mangrove ecosystems, all maintained by Guthrie. Its strategic importance attracts international visitors, including diplomats, researchers, and academic institutions.
