The island features 1,441 hectares of mangrove forests, mudflats, swamps, and forest patches. It’s a thriving ecosystem that supports conservation and ecological resilience.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise
With 65 bird species—including migratory and resident birds like the Brahminy Kite and Chinese Egret—Carey Island is a sanctuary for birdwatchers, especially from September to April.

Home to 195 species of phytoplankton and thousands of rare, threatened, and endangered tree species, the island plays a vital role in both marine and terrestrial food chains.
Cultural Heartland of the Mah Meri
The island is home to the Mah Meri, an indigenous Orang Asli tribe known for their wood carvings and rituals. Their preserved traditions add cultural depth to Carey Island’s identity. There are five Mah Meri villages on the island.
